The Tesla battery replacement cost depends on the model, the size of the pack and whether the whole battery has to be replaced or a repair is enough. A new traction battery can cost tens of thousands of euros, but before worrying about the price, check two things: is the battery still under warranty, and what is the real cause of the fault?
In this article we explain what makes up the Tesla battery replacement cost, which public figures are known and when a repair makes more sense. We do not publish made-up prices: we only quote sourced figures and the “from” prices in our price list.
Check the warranty first
Tesla’s battery and drive unit warranty in Europe runs for eight years. The mileage limit is 240,000 km for Model S and Model X, 192,000 km for the Long Range and Performance versions of Model 3 and Model Y, and 160,000 km for rear-wheel-drive Model 3 and Model Y, whichever comes first. During that time the battery must retain at least 70 percent of its capacity, as stated in Tesla’s warranty terms.
Older cars may have different terms. In 2014, for example, Tesla extended the battery and drive unit warranty of the 85 kWh Model S to eight years with no mileage limit. The eight years run from delivery, so every Model S delivered before 2018 is now out of warranty. You will find the exact terms in your car’s warranty documents or in the Tesla app.

Tesla battery replacement cost: what goes into it
Once the warranty has expired, the owner pays the full Tesla battery replacement cost. A quote is made up of several parts, and it is worth asking about each one separately:
- Battery capacity: the price of a pack depends largely on its kilowatt-hours, so a bigger battery usually costs more.
- New or refurbished battery: besides new batteries, the market also offers refurbished packs, with different prices and warranties.
- Labour and checks: removing and fitting the pack, refilling the cooling system and checking the high-voltage system with diagnostic equipment after the swap.
- Warranty on the new battery: a high-voltage battery bought from Tesla carries Tesla’s parts warranty of 4 years or 80,000 km, whichever comes first.
Public figures and their limits
The exact price depends on the specific car and quote, but the order of magnitude is known. The Finnish magazine Tekniikan Maailma has described an EV traction battery as a component that may be worth tens of thousands of euros. That sum is exactly why the Tesla battery replacement cost deserves a careful decision.
In the US, battery data company Recurrent has collected owner reports on Tesla battery replacement costs outside warranty. Model S owners were quoted roughly $12,000 to $22,000 for a full pack in 2020–2021, and in the Model 3 examples the total including labour was around $13,000 to $16,000. These are US prices and older data that cannot be converted directly into prices in Estonia.
Recurrent also notes that the overall battery replacement rate in its community is only 2.5 percent. Our price list does not include a pack replacement price, and we will not guess one. The “from” prices in our list are: Tesla repair work from €80, diagnostics and electrical work from €150, and reading and clearing fault codes from €150. VAT is added to these prices.
Repair or replace: diagnosis decides
A battery fault does not automatically mean you need a new battery. The same symptom, such as a sudden drop in range or a charging limit, can be caused by ageing cells but also by a problem with the battery management system (BMS), the contactors or moisture damage. That is why the Tesla battery replacement cost, or the cost of a repair, can only be estimated honestly after measurements.
The car also gives signals. According to the alert list in Tesla’s owner’s manual, BMS_a079, for example, means the car has detected a condition inside the high-voltage battery that stops it charging above 50 percent, and Tesla advises scheduling service. Such an alert points to a problem inside the pack, but before you accept a Tesla battery replacement cost quote, you need to know exactly what is broken.
A good example is a Tesla Model S 85 that came to our workshop. The BMS reported a 95 percent state of charge, but the pack measured only about 50 V DC instead of roughly 400 V. Road salt and time had corroded the aluminium, water had got into the BMS board area, the BMS had failed and the contactors had burned and welded shut.
With a fault like this you have to establish whether the damage is limited to the BMS, the contactors and corrosion, or whether the modules have suffered too. If the cells are healthy, a repair can be a sensible alternative to paying the Tesla battery replacement cost for a whole pack. - Which fault code or measurement shows that the fault is in the cells and not in the supporting systems?
- Is the car still covered by the battery and drive unit warranty?
- Is the offer for a new or a refurbished battery, and what warranty comes with it?
- What does the quote include besides the battery: labour, coolant and a check after the swap?

Can an independent workshop do out-of-warranty battery work?
