Tesla windshield replacement is more than cutting out the old glass and bonding in a new one. The forward cameras sit at the top of the windshield by the mirror and are mounted on the glass, and many cars also have a heated wiper park area and a humidity and temperature sensor. After replacement the cameras have to be recalibrated, otherwise some driver assistance features will not work. If a stone chip is small and away from the cameras’ view, a repair may be enough.
If a stone hits the glass, cover the chip with clear tape as soon as you can and avoid sudden temperature changes, such as hot air from the blower on an icy windshield. This keeps dirt and moisture out of the chip and lowers the risk of a crack spreading from it. The sooner the glass is checked, the better the chance that Tesla windshield replacement is not needed at all.
Repair or replace?
A repair costs less than Tesla windshield replacement: resin is injected into the chip to fill the damage and stop a crack from growing. The ANSI/ROLAGS standard for repairing laminated auto glass still recommends replacement if the damage goes through both layers of glass, has three or more long cracks running from it, is on the inner layer, or sits where a repair could affect features built into the glass, such as sensors.
On a Tesla, the main question is the cameras’ field of view. The forward cameras look through the top of the glass, and any distortion there can affect the camera image. That is why we do not recommend repairing chips in front of the cameras or directly at the driver’s eye level. A small chip low on the glass or away from the edge, on the other hand, can often be repaired for less than a new windshield.
Tesla windshield replacement and the inspection
At the Estonian technical inspection, the windshield is divided into zones according to the Transport Administration’s guide. In the driver’s direct field of view, the steering-wheel-wide strip of the wiper area, a single chip that fits inside a 10 mm circle is a minor defect. Two such chips in that zone are a major defect. In the rest of the wiper area, a single crack or damage under 40 mm is not a major defect.
A crack from edge to edge or a cluster of cracks in the wiper area, however, means a re-inspection. The same guide also treats glass without an E mark as a major defect. So the glass used for Tesla windshield replacement must be certified and match the car’s exact specification, not just be the same shape.
What Tesla specifies for the job
For example, according to Tesla’s service manual for the 2024 and newer Model 3, the forward camera is removed with its fan and glare shield and refitted to the new glass, and the humidity and temperature sensor connector is plugged back in. The new windshield is bonded with urethane, and the car must not be driven until the adhesive maker’s minimum drive-away time has passed.
After fitting, the manual calls for resetting the driver assistance system in Service Mode, checking the forward camera pitch and selecting the part number of the installed windshield in the car’s thermal settings. The car has to know which glass is fitted. We carry out the work to Tesla Service protocols and use licensed Tesla Toolbox 3 diagnostic equipment.
How Tesla windshield replacement is done
At our workshop the job follows five steps:
- We check the right glass by VIN: camera mount, heated area, sensors and E mark.
- We remove the forward camera, trims and connectors and cut out the old glass.
- We clean and prime the frame, bond the new glass and let the adhesive cure.
- We refit the camera, reconnect the sensors and configure the new glass in the car.
- We clear the camera calibration so the car can calibrate the cameras again.
According to Tesla’s instructions, calibration usually completes after 32-40 km of driving, but the distance depends on the road and conditions. It completes fastest on a multi-lane road with clear lane markings and light traffic. Until then, features such as Lane Departure Avoidance and Automatic Emergency Braking are unavailable, and the touchscreen tells you so.
If calibration has not finished after about 160 km in suitable conditions, Tesla advises contacting service. In that case we check the camera mounting and the camera alerts and restart calibration if needed. Usually, though, ordinary driving on well-marked roads is all it takes.

Wiper heater and other details
The Model 3 and Model Y often have a wiper defroster: a heating element in the lower part of the windshield where the wipers rest. According to Tesla’s owner’s manual, you turn it on from the touchscreen and it runs for 30 minutes. If the car has this feature, the new glass must have the same heating element and its connector must be plugged in properly, otherwise the wipers freeze to the glass in winter.
The exact glass version matters too. Tesla windshields differ by model, year and specification, for example in the camera mount, the heated area and the acoustic layer. The wrong version can mean a feature does not work or the glass does not sit exactly in the frame. That is why we only order the glass after checking the VIN.

Insurance and glass damage
Tesla windshield replacement after damage is usually covered by comprehensive (kasko) insurance. Many policies have a separate glass deductible, and some insurers charge no deductible at all if the glass is repaired rather than replaced. A glass roof may come under different terms. Check your policy before the work so the bill is not a surprise.
We handle insurance claims directly with insurers such as If, Swedbank P&C, PZU, ERGO, Gjensidige, Compensa, BTA, Salva, Inges and LHV. There is more on our claims handling page. If the body was damaged along with the glass, read our article on Tesla collision repair.

Frequently asked questions
Do Tesla cameras need calibrating after windshield replacement?
Yes. Tesla’s instructions say calibration must be cleared if a camera has moved from its calibrated position, for example because the windshield was replaced. The car then calibrates the cameras itself while driving, usually within 32-40 km. Until it finishes, some driver assistance features are switched off.
Can a stone chip in a Tesla windshield be repaired?
Often yes, if the chip is small, only in the outer layer and away from both the cameras’ view and the driver’s direct view. If a crack has already started from the damage or it sits in front of the cameras, the right answer is Tesla windshield replacement.
Does insurance pay for Tesla windshield replacement?
With comprehensive cover, usually yes, but your share is the glass deductible stated in the policy. Your motor third-party liability insurance does not cover glass damage to your own car. You report the claim to your insurer, and we settle the rest directly with them.
How much does Tesla windshield replacement cost?
The price depends on the model, year and glass version, meaning the camera mount, heated area and glass layers your car has. Send us the car’s VIN for an exact quote. With an insurance claim you usually pay only the deductible in your policy.
If your windshield has a chip or a crack, send a photo and the VIN to info@servicemode.ee or call +372 5851 0695. We will tell you whether the glass can be repaired or needs replacing and book a time at our workshop in Peetri. Read more about our glass replacement service or get in touch via our contact page.
