Official Tesla service or an independent workshop: what the warranty allows

24/09/2026

Official Tesla service is needed when a fault is covered by the warranty or the car is subject to a recall. Under Tesla warranty, independent service is fine for routine maintenance and non-warranty repairs, according to Tesla itself. What matters is that the work is done correctly and documented, because the warranty does not cover damage caused by faulty work.

The topic is new in Estonia, where Tesla officially started operating in 2026. We explain what Tesla’s warranty terms and EU competition rules say, what always stays with Tesla and when an independent workshop makes sense. We do not give legal advice; we describe what the sources say.

Official Tesla service in Estonia: what changed in 2026

Tesla opened its Estonian store at the Ülemiste centre in Tallinn on 24 April 2026, ERR reported, and orders for the Model 3 and Model Y opened at the same time. The first customer cars were delivered on 10 August. Until then the nearest official Tesla locations were in Finland and Lithuania, so Estonian owners had to travel both to buy and for service.

According to reports published in August, Tesla will open a permanent store and service centre in Peetri and plans mobile service in Estonia. We do not confirm an exact opening date here. Even once official Tesla service is available in Estonia, it does not change what an independent workshop may do: that depends on the warranty terms and EU rules, not on where the service centre is.

What Tesla’s warranty says about independent servicing

The FAQ on Tesla’s warranty page is direct: to receive service covered by a Tesla limited warranty, you need to take the car to a Tesla Service Center, but for any non-warranty repair or maintenance you may use your preferred non-Tesla service centre. Tesla adds that it is not responsible for issues caused by improper repair or maintenance by a third party.

The warranty terms also contain limits every workshop should know. The warranty does not cover damage from improper repair or from using fluids and parts other than those specified. The Battery and Drive Unit warranty does not cover damage from servicing or opening the battery or drive unit by non-Tesla or non-certified personnel. During the warranty period, high-voltage battery and drive unit faults should therefore go to Tesla.

The owner also has a record-keeping duty. Under Tesla’s terms, you are responsible for keeping accurate maintenance records: the VIN, the name and address of the service centre, mileage, date and a description of the work. Not installing software updates or not complying with recall notices can also void the warranty.

Tesla warranty: independent service under EU rules

The European Commission’s Motor Vehicle Block Exemption Regulation (EU) No 461/2010 covers agreements between carmakers and their authorised dealers and repairers. The Commission extended it with Regulation (EU) 2023/822 until 31 May 2028 and at the same time updated the Supplementary Guidelines, so that independent garages keep access to the vehicle data they need for repairs.

In short, the Supplementary Guidelines and the Commission’s 2012 frequently asked questions set out these principles:

  • A manufacturer’s warranty should not depend on maintenance and repairs not covered by the warranty being done only in the authorised network.
  • Warranty terms should not require the manufacturer’s own brand of parts for replacements the warranty does not cover.
  • A manufacturer can legitimately refuse a warranty claim if the fault is causally linked to incorrectly done work or a poor-quality part.
  • An independent repairer should not be barred from accessing or updating the vehicle’s service record where the manufacturer is the only source of it.

These principles concern agreements between a manufacturer and its authorised network, and the Commission’s FAQ notes that national consumer protection law applies alongside them. Tesla sells and services its cars largely itself, so in everyday practice Tesla’s own warranty text matters most. In a dispute, contact the Estonian Consumer Protection and Technical Regulatory Authority (TTJA) or a lawyer.

What stays with Tesla

Warranty repairs are done by Tesla. If a part made or supplied by Tesla fails during the warranty period, such as the charge port mechanism or the touchscreen, Tesla repairs it free of charge. An independent workshop can diagnose the fault, but only the manufacturer does free warranty work. The same applies to the high-voltage battery and drive unit, which under current terms are covered for 8 years and, depending on the model, 160,000 to 240,000 km.

Recalls are also fixed by the manufacturer free of charge. Many Tesla recalls are resolved with an over-the-air software update, so the car does not need to visit a service centre, while physical work is done by Tesla Service. When buying a used car, check by VIN whether all recalls have been completed.

Independent servicing during the warranty period

Much of a car’s life falls outside the warranty anyway. Tesla’s warranty does not cover maintenance or wear items such as wheel alignment, brake pads, filters and wiper blades, nor damage from accidents and stone chips. The owner pays for this work and can have it done at a workshop of their choice.

At our workshop this means, for example, maintenance to Tesla’s recommendations, cleaning and lubricating brake calipers on cars driven on salted roads, brake pad and disc replacement, suspension work, 3D wheel alignment, glass replacement with camera calibration, insurance body repairs and electrical work. We use licensed Tesla Toolbox 3 diagnostic equipment and original parts and follow Tesla service protocols.

Access to the tools is no accident. Article 61 of EU type-approval Regulation (EU) 2018/858 requires manufacturers to give independent operators unrestricted, standardised and non-discriminatory access to diagnostic information, equipment, software and repair and maintenance information. Ask for an invoice for every job showing the VIN, mileage, date and work done, as it is your evidence in any warranty dispute.

How to choose: official Tesla service or an independent workshop

If the car is under warranty and the fault could be a manufacturing defect, official Tesla service is the right choice, because warranty work is free there. For maintenance, worn parts, accident repairs or a car already out of warranty, choose a workshop that offers a suitable appointment, a clear quote and documented work.

For cars no longer under Tesla warranty, independent service often has an edge, as on many older Model S cars whose battery and drive unit cover has ended: a faulty component can be repaired without replacing the whole unit. We cover the Tesla battery warranty terms in more detail in a separate article.

Frequently asked questions

Will I lose my Tesla warranty if I use an independent workshop?

According to Tesla’s own answer, no: non-warranty repairs and maintenance may be done outside Tesla. With a Tesla warranty, independent service still has limits: damage from faulty work or wrong parts is not covered, and opening the high-voltage battery or drive unit without certification takes them out of warranty. Keep all invoices.

Is official Tesla service mandatory?

For warranty repairs and recalls, yes, because Tesla does them. For routine maintenance, official Tesla service is not mandatory. Cleaning and lubricating the brake calipers, for example, which Tesla recommends every year or 20,000 km where roads are salted, can be done by an independent workshop too. What to service on a Tesla and when is explained in our article on the Tesla maintenance schedule.

Is the warranty on a Tesla bought in Finland or Germany valid in Estonia?

Tesla’s European warranty terms apply within the Tesla European Warranty Region, which includes the countries of the European Economic Area, Estonia and Finland among them. According to the European Commission’s FAQ, the warranty on a car bought in another member state should generally apply too, although terms can vary between countries.

Can an independent workshop read and clear Tesla fault codes?

Yes, if the workshop has Tesla diagnostic equipment. We use licensed Toolbox 3 to read and clear fault codes and to see the log of earlier alerts. Reading and clearing fault codes starts from €150 in our price list, and prices exclude VAT.
