Capacity usually falls fastest in the first years and then levels off. If range drops suddenly, the cause is more often a fault than ageing.

Below we explain what normal Tesla battery degradation looks like, what speeds it up, how to check capacity yourself and when the battery is worth examining in a workshop. It helps to separate three things: natural ageing, the temporary effect of cold weather and a fault caused by one weak cell group.

Tesla battery degradation: Tesla’s figures and independent data

Tesla publishes battery ageing data in its impact reports. The average capacity loss after 200,000 miles was 12 % for Model S and Model X and 15 % for Model 3 and Model Y Long Range. In other words, typical Tesla battery degradation leaves more than 80 % of the original capacity even at very high mileage.

As an independent comparison, the telematics company Geotab analysed data from 22,700 electric cars across 21 models and found that capacity falls by 2.3 % a year on average. Many cars show a steeper drop in the first year or two, after which the rate evens out. At the average rate, battery health after 8 years would be about 82 %.

What speeds up battery ageing

Tesla battery degradation comes from two processes: calendar ageing, which is time, and cycle ageing, which is use. Both are accelerated by the same factors:

Frequent high-power rapid charging. In Geotab’s data, batteries often charged above 100 kW aged by up to 3.0 % a year, versus about 1.5 % for cars that rarely used rapid chargers.

Long periods at extreme charge levels. Degradation sped up when a car spent over 80 % of its time below 20 % or above 80 % charge.

Heat. In hot climates batteries aged 0.4 percentage points a year faster than in mild ones.

A charge limit that does not suit the chemistry. For nickel-based batteries Tesla recommends a daily limit below 90 %, while for LFP batteries it recommends charging to 100 % at least once a week.

In practice this comes down to simple habits: set your daily charge limit to suit the chemistry, charge at home on AC where you can and do not leave the car standing for weeks with a full or nearly empty battery. You can see your car’s battery type under Controls > Software > Additional Vehicle Information. Rapid chargers are for long trips, not everyday use.

The cool climate of Estonia and Finland is, if anything, an advantage for battery ageing. Cold temporarily reduces range and charging speed in winter, but that is not Tesla battery degradation: the capacity comes back. Charging habits still matter most.

How to check capacity yourself

The range on the screen is a poor measure of Tesla battery degradation because it depends on temperature, driving style and cell balance. A better option is Controls > Service > Battery Health, which, according to Tesla’s owner’s manual, compares BMS data with the expected result for a battery of the same type, age and usage. If you want, you can also run a battery test that takes up to 24 hours.

The test needs an AC charger of at least 5 kW and a charge level below 20 %, and Tesla recommends it only if capacity is a concern. With a data connection, the car also shows whether the result is as expected for its age and mileage. The test will not start if there is an active battery or thermal system alert, and in that case the alert itself is a clue. Our Tesla battery health check article explains how to read the result.

When capacity loss is a fault, not ageing

A Tesla battery is made of cell groups connected in series. A Model S 85 pack, for example, has 16 modules and 96 groups in series, each with 74 cells in parallel. When discharging, the BMS stops the current as soon as the weakest group reaches its lower voltage limit, even if the others still hold energy. One weak group therefore sets the usable capacity of the whole pack. If cells in a group stop working, for example because of moisture or a bad connection, that group’s capacity shrinks.

Normal Tesla battery degradation is slow and even. Sudden changes point to a fault:

range drops by several percent within weeks or months, even in warm weather;

the charge level falls sharply when low, or the car limits power although the battery should still hold energy;

charging stops before the set limit, or the battery never finishes balancing;

alerts starting with BMS appear on the screen.

With symptoms like these, do not wait for the next service: a weak group, moisture or a faulty BMS board can get worse over time. We had a Model S 85 in our workshop whose BMS showed 95 % charge while the pack measured only about 50 V instead of roughly 400 V: salt had corroded the aluminium, water had reached the BMS board and the contactors had welded shut.

What to do if capacity is too low

Check the warranty first. Tesla covers capacity falling below 70 % within 8 years and a model-specific mileage. We explain the terms and exclusions in our Tesla battery warranty article.

Once the warranty has ended, diagnostics show whether you are dealing with normal Tesla battery degradation or a specific fault. With Toolbox 3 we read the BMS history and cell group voltages, measure insulation and look for traces of moisture. In a modular pack it is sometimes possible to replace a single module or repair the BMS and contactors. For an evenly aged battery, repair will not bring capacity back.

Diagnostics and electrical work start from €150, as does reading and clearing fault codes; prices exclude VAT. It is also worth checking the battery before buying a used car, since Tesla battery degradation depends heavily on the previous owner’s charging habits.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a Tesla battery last?

Tesla’s figures show an average of 85–88 % capacity remaining after 320,000 km, so the battery usually lasts for very high mileage. No one can promise an exact number of years, because Tesla battery degradation depends on charging, climate and use.

Does rapid charging damage a Tesla battery?

It does not damage it, but frequent high-power rapid charging speeds up ageing: in Geotab’s data, up to 3.0 % a year versus about 1.5 % for cars that rarely use rapid chargers. For everyday charging, a home or workplace charger is the better choice.

Can battery capacity be restored?

The capacity of an evenly aged battery cannot be restored. But if the cause is a weak cell group, a module or a BMS fault, a repair may bring back some or all of the usable capacity. Diagnostics will tell.

Does cold weather cause Tesla battery degradation?

Not in a lasting way. Part of a cold battery’s energy is temporarily unavailable and charging is slower, but this recovers as the battery warms up. Compare battery health results in similar conditions.

If your range has shrunk faster than normal Tesla battery degradation would explain, or there is a BMS warning on the screen, book battery diagnostics.
