Some of this is on the car’s screen and in the Tesla app; the rest comes from diagnostic equipment and a look at the car on a lift.

The range quoted in the advert and the seller’s promise that the battery is as good as new tell you little. The kilometres on the screen are an estimate that depends on temperature and the battery management system’s calculation, and internal faults may not show up on a test drive. If a fault appears after the sale and the warranty has expired, the cost is yours.

Below are the points we cover in a used Tesla battery check before purchase. For the rest of the car, including suspension, brakes and body, see our used Tesla inspection guide.

How much battery warranty is left

Tesla’s battery and drive unit warranty runs for eight years. The distance limit is 240,000 km for Model S and Model X, 160,000 km for the base Model 3 and Model Y RWD, and 192,000 km for Long Range and Performance versions. During the warranty the battery must keep at least 70% of its capacity. You can find the terms on Tesla’s warranty page.

The warranty follows the car and is transferred to the new owner when the ownership transfer is done through Tesla. Ask the seller to open Specs & Warranty in the Tesla app and show you the Warranty tab. Older Model S and X cars had different terms: early cars with the 85 kWh battery, for example, had no distance limit, but the warranty did not cover gradual loss of capacity either.

Keep the exclusions in mind too. Tesla’s warranty does not cover water damage or costs caused by letting the battery run flat. If the pack is already more than eight years old, the risk is yours and a used Tesla battery check matters even more.

Used Tesla battery check: capacity and the built-in test

On newer Teslas you can see the battery evaluation under Controls > Service > Battery Health. The exact percentage comes from the Battery Health Test, which takes up to 24 hours and requires the battery to be below 20% and the car to be plugged into an AC charger of at least 5 kW. It cannot be done during a test drive, so ask the seller to run it before you meet. We explain how to read the result in our article on the Tesla battery health check.

Do not compare the kilometres shown after a full charge with the advert or with a new car’s figures. The range estimate can be much lower in the cold, and the battery management system’s estimate can drift. The test percentage, cell group voltages and whether the result fits the car’s age and mileage are far more reliable.

Charging history and how the car was used

The charging statistics in the Tesla app show how the battery has been charged: what share of the energy came from home, Superchargers or elsewhere. According to the Tesla owner’s manual, peak charging power may drop slightly after a very large number of DC fast charging sessions. That is no reason to walk away, but it is one data point in a used Tesla battery check.

More important is whether the car has been left unplugged for a long time. Tesla says a parked car can lose about 1% of charge per day, so a car that has stood on a lot for months may have reached zero. A complete discharge can damage other components such as the 12V battery, and the warranty does not cover those costs.

The underside of the pack and physical damage

No used Tesla battery check is complete without looking underneath, because the battery sits in the floor of the car and takes every hit from kerbs, stones and potholes. On a lift we look for dents, deep scratches, a damaged shield plate or corrosion around fasteners and connectors. Salted roads speed up corrosion, especially on older cars.

We had a Model S 85 in our workshop whose battery had aluminium corroded by salt and time. Water got into the BMS board section, the BMS failed, and the contactors burned and welded shut. Damage like this develops over years; a test drive will not reveal it, only a proper used Tesla battery check.

Signs of moisture and water ingress

The high-voltage system has to be electrically isolated from the body, so a used Tesla battery check also looks for moisture. If it gets into the pack, isolation drops, the car raises a BMS alert and sometimes refuses to charge. Diagnostic equipment also shows alerts that have disappeared from the screen and the isolation alert counters.

Always ask whether the car has been in a flood or deep water. Tesla advises treating a flooded car as if it has been in an accident. For a car imported from abroad, it is also worth checking its history and damage records where they are available.

What to ask the seller

As part of a used Tesla battery check, ask the seller to tell you and show you:

the warranty tab in the Tesla app and the date the car was first put into service;

the Battery Health Test result and when it was run;

the charging statistics: home, Supercharger or other;

whether the battery or any of its parts has been replaced or repaired, and the invoices;

whether the car has stood flat for long, been in water or taken hits to the underside;

whether any battery or charging alerts have appeared on the screen.

If the seller will not let the car go to diagnostics before the sale, that is an answer too. A reasonable seller understands that a used Tesla battery check protects both sides.

Pre-purchase battery inspection in the workshop

During a pre-purchase used Tesla battery check we read the battery data and alert history with Tesla’s licensed Toolbox 3 equipment, compare cell group voltages and inspect the underside of the pack on a lift. We explain which findings are normal for the car’s age and which are a reason to negotiate the price. You can read more on our diagnostics page.

We also help with buying a used EV in Europe and registering it in Estonia. It makes sense to look at the battery data before any money has been transferred.

Frequently asked questions

Does the battery warranty transfer to the new owner?

Yes. Tesla’s New Vehicle Limited Warranty follows the car and is transferred to the new owner when the ownership transfer is done through Tesla. The warranty period counts from when the car was first put into service, usually delivery to the first owner, not from the date you buy it.

How much capacity loss is acceptable on a used Tesla?

There is no fixed limit. The car itself judges whether the result fits its age and mileage. According to Tesla’s own figures, Model S and X batteries lost about 12% of their capacity on average after roughly 320,000 km. A clearly bigger loss on a young car needs an explanation.

Is a battery that was often Supercharged a bad buy?

Not necessarily. Tesla says peak charging power may drop slightly after many DC fast charging sessions. Overall condition, cell group voltages and alert history tell you more than the charging method.

Can I do a used Tesla battery check on a car bought abroad?

Yes, if the car can be brought to our workshop before you pay. If that is not possible, ask the seller for at least the Battery Health Test result, the warranty details and a list of alerts.

If you are about to buy, book a used Tesla battery check as part of our pre-purchase diagnostics at our workshop in Peetri, near Tallinn Airport. Diagnostics start from €150 (prices exclude VAT).
